Bowl Games & Rivalry Week

Institutional pairings that give the regular season shape and stakes.

Bowl Games are persistent, named matchups that recur year to year; they are designed to build lore between pairs of franchises, one annual clash at a time.

Rivalry Week matchups are hand-selected to put the most compelling cross-conference and intra-conference rivalries on the field simultaneously. Unlike Bowl Games, the Rivalry Week pairings are fluid and can be revised each season.

Each Bowl Game is a named, institutionalized rivalry matchup between two specific franchises. The pairing is fixed — the same two teams play their Bowl Game every season. These games are spread throughout the regular season schedule and carry the weight of a named tradition. Bowl Games return year to year unless officially dissolved.

Rivalry Week is a single designated week late in the regular season where all 7 matchups are rivalry pairings — cross-conference, historically contentious, or geographically meaningful. Unlike Bowl Games, Rivalry Week pairings can change year to year. It's the most watched week of the regular season.
